AN IMPORTANT UPDATE ON EA’S UPCOMING COMPETITIVE GAMING EVENTSApril 16, 2020
Apex Legends Global Series and FIFA 20 Global Series Events Impacted by Coronavirus
The novel coronavirus (COVID-19) is impacting communities around the world, including the gaming industry. As a result, we are providing the following updates for the Apex Legends Global Series and the EA SPORTS FIFA 20 Global Series.
Apex Legends Global Series:
Major 1 of the Apex Legends Global Series | Arlington, Texas | March 13 – 15 | Postponed
EA is postponing this event and will provide a new event date and updated Apex Legends Global Series schedule in the near future.
Apex Legends Global Series Online Tournament #2 | March 21 and 23 | Remains
Apex Legends Global Series Online Tournament #2 will take place as planned.
EA SPORTS FIFA 20 Global Series:
CONMEBOL eLibertadores Online & Live Event | March 7 – 8 | Postponed
EA is postponing this event and will provide a new date for it in the future.
eChampions League | Online Qualifiers | March 14 – 15 | Remains
EA will be holding the eChampions League online qualifier March 14th and 15th as planned, more details for the eChampions League live event will be announced at a later date.
FUT Champions Cup Stage V | Bucharest | April 3 – 5 | Cancelled
This event is now cancelled.
PlayStation Licensed Qualifying Event | May 2 – 3 | Cancelled
The live Licensed Qualifying Event originally scheduled for May 2nd and 3rd has been cancelled.
While we don’t have any new dates to share at this point in time, we’ll look to provide more information regarding these events and the effect on each of the Global Series as soon as we can.
These decisions haven’t come easy, but given the large, global nature of these events, we believe that making these changes are in the best interest of protecting the health of the community, including competitors, attendees and staff. As we continue to monitor the situation around the Coronavirus and receive guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and World Health Organization (WHO), we’ll continue to evaluate and provide more updates as it relates to all of EA’s Competitive Gaming events.
What competitive gaming events are being cancelled or postponed?
The following events are being cancelled or postponed:
- Apex Legends Global Series
- Major | Arlington | March 13-15 | Postponed
- EA SPORTS FIFA 20 Global Series
- CONMEBOL eLibertadores Online & Live Event | Postponed
- FUT Champions Cup Stage V | Bucharest | April 3 – 5 | Cancelled
- PlayStation Licensed Qualifying Event | May 2 – 3 | Cancelled
What events are still happening?
Several online-only events will still be taking place in the weeks ahead including:
- Apex Legends Global Series Online Tournament #2 | March 21 and 23
- EA SPORTS FIFA 20 Global Series eChampions League Online Qualifiers | March 14 – 15
When will you be announcing the new dates for postponed events?
We don’t have specific dates to share at this time but will be making an update in the near future.
Why is EA cancelling these events?
These events are being cancelled or postponed due to the current situation with the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) and its impact, not just on the gaming industry but the entire world.
Why are some events being cancelled and some being postponed?
We are working together with our partners to determine the best course of action for each unique event.
Will more events be cancelled due to the coronavirus (COVID-19)?
We will continue to monitor the situation around the Coronavirus, including guidance from the CDC and WHO, and will evaluate and provide more updates as it relates to all of EA’s Competitive Gaming Events.
Are spectators able to get a refund for their ticket to live events?
For ticketed events, fans who purchased tickets to attend an event will receive a refund in the next 4-6 weeks.
Will competitors be reimbursed for air travel/hotel expenses resulting from these cancellations and postponements?
Our first priority was making a decision on the events. These decisions were made in the best interest of protecting the health of the community, including competitors, attendees, and staff. As soon as that decision was made, we wanted to make that info public immediately. We will now put our focus towards the financial implications on our community and we’ll update you how we plan to address as soon as we can.
